From a very early age, quite unbeknown to me, I was advocating for the rights of people who’s voices were being hushed and who’s rights were being diminished without their consent, usually despite their existence. From a very early age, quite unbeknown to me, I was advocating for the rights of people who’s voices were being hushed and who’s rights were being diminished without their consent, usually despite their existence. This experience perhaps was the driving force of a strong foundation in advocating for people who identified as members of minority groups, opening the pathway to providing support in any way possible to make a positive difference in their lives.
Despite being a relatively late comer to Occupational Therapy, having only graduated from James Cook University in 2013, the diverse array of occupations I have accumulated in my lifetime has enriched my university degree with endless opportunities.
Those opportunities have given me the privilege to work with clients to create solutions in overcoming challenging barriers that were preventing them from fulfilling their meaningful occupations. The absolute best part of this scenario is the achieved success and reward of seeing the elation on my clients faces, and being able to bask in the knowledge that you played a small part in empowering them to improve their quality of life. There is nothing sweeter, this is the reason I love what I do and why I became an Occupational Therapist.
The other reason I became and Occupational Therapist, is because every single client I have had since becoming an OT, has taught me something. I am forever grateful for the endless learning and the endless connections with people this occupation provides me. It makes me appreciate the life I have been afforded, so if I can give something back to others which in turn helps them, then my work is complete.
